Preface. This is a book about encounters—literally and figuratively speaking. In one way or another, the nine chapters are about encounters among the authors and collaborators and their meetings with rural women and men, and with women and men working for local and national governments and for non-governmental organizations (NGOs), in a number of South Asian and South-East Asian countries. Thirty-one different genotypes of rice were planted at 8 dates in day intervals starting 27 April at the experimental field of the Regional Agriculture Research Station, Lumle, Nepal. The shortest duration to flowering was observed for planting dates in late May and early June.

Preface Nepal, along with three quarters of human population occupying a quarter of the global landmass is facing unprecedented disaster risks. The qaiya-aneya is an indigenous rice rattan agroforestry system practised by Hani swinddeners for a period over years. Upland rice and maize are intercropped with tuber crops like yam, taro, and cucurbits (Cucumis hystrix and Benincasa hispida). The ‘Qaiya’ stage takes two or three years, when soil fertility is exhausted.

However, the provisions of ES are likely to be impacted by changes in climate and/or changes in land use. In developing countries, where people are typically dependent on these services for their livelihoods, these impacts are of concern; however, very little is known about the Author: Shankar Adhikari, Himlal Baral, Vishwas Sudhir Chitale, Craig R.
